Seat belts.

Can someone please clarify the seat belt law for me, because I seen a lot of younger people driving around without the belts on.  And what is the plenty for not using them?

If they are fitted to the car you`ve got wear them & that includes those in the back.If they were standard fitment to the car & you`ve taken them out then it`s also a fine.

The driver is responsible for the passengers belting up,if they don`t then the driver gets the ticket.

Without looking it up ............ i'm sure if the passenger in the car is over 18yrs old and does not wear their belt they are the ones who get the fine not the driver as the driver can only advise .. A minor in the car not wearing a belt is the responsibility of the driver. There are only 2 reason a person doesn't have to wear a seatbelt ... 1) Health Problems .... they have to wear a form of restraint but it may not be the normal seatbelt we see and 2) the driver is reversing .... due to causing people discomfort you can remove your belt and reverse your car. But i take it they weren't driving around in reverse

I fink u will find it 16 years old but not sure.  I allways fort if the car was in motion then u had to wear a seatbelt and i fink Taxi drive are alloud to drive with out there belts on due to the risk of being highjacked or mugged but iam not 100% on that.  If u r caught not wearing a seat belt then it a £30 quid fine but if u stop and get out the car then just tell the copper to prove u wasnt wearing one oh and i allways wear my belt just incase n e one ask.

Very interesting!  Just wondered if the law had been changed to say that moded cars drivers didn't need to wear them or something!!  Sorry folks!!!!

recently I've seen some many young people driving without wearing seat belts and even worse kiddies in cars with no seat belts or proper child seats!!  Saturday we were out in the Super Snipe, which doesn't have seat belts fitted and  by law we don't have to have them and this guy starts having a go because of how Sniper had parked the Super Snipe at the petrol station, hmmm  what did see??  No-one in the car were wearing belts, the mouthy drive, nor his rude wife or his three kiddies under 5 in the back!  Made me cross it did.  "Get your own house in order first" I said "before telling my husband off you tw*t!"  I said.  Good job Sniper wasn't about, he was paying for the petrol....

You go girl .......... Stupid mouthy tw*t!!! Nah Woolley when i was taking my lessons my instructor told me i didn't have to wear it as it could decrease the amount i look over my shoulder due to discomfort!! I always get people to buckle up in my car - which reminds me i have to pull rear seatbelts out - if they don't i give them a friendly jolt which normally makes them think again

I tend to use my mirrors when reversing more so than looking out the back ..... think it's down to having gone out with a lorry driver .... tends to help more anyway

I think if you're over 18 then it's you that gets into trouble.

Unless, as Chevy states they weren't fitted as standard as in many pre1970 cars.  The Super Snipe didn't have belts front or rear, but clever Sniper fitted them to the back to keep the little ones safe, funny enough neither Little Sniper or Baby Bird were happy being in the car without them!  Belts in the front of the Super Snipe were an option back in 1960, but they were just lap belts and it would have cost something like £3 and 5 shillings to have them put in, bearing in mind the car would have cost just under £2000 new( The Mini would have cost under £500!!  Gives you an idea of what the Humber was, more like a top end Merc in todays car market.)  Bit of useless info there for you

The Law – Seat Belts in Cars

Adults
Drivers and adult front seat passengers in cars must wear a seat belt, unless they have a medical exemption certificate. Adults travelling in the rear of a car must also use seat belts, if they are fitted. It is the responsibility of the adult passenger (not the driver) to ensure that they are using the seat belt.

Children under 3 years old
If carried in the front seat, an appropriate child restraint MUST be used (the adult seat belt is not sufficient). If carried in the rear seat, an appropriate child restraint MUST be used, if available.

If an appropriate restraint is fitted in the front of the car, but not the rear, children under 3 years old MUST sit in the front and use that restraint. Remember, many restraints can be fitted in the rear seats (check the manufacturer’s instructions). Rearward-facing seats should always be put in the rear if a front passenger airbag is fitted.

You MUST wear a seat belt if one is available, unless you are exempt. Those exempt from the requirement include the holders of medical exemption certificates and people making local deliveries in a vehicle designed for the purpose.

It also states that a passenger over the age of 14 is classed as responsible and therefore they have the problem if they are caught without a seatbelt not the driver

Going off on another thread, but still talking about loop holes.  If you drive within central London, you know the bit covered by the congestion charge, and you're driving a car with the old style black & chrome number plate, you won't get fined!  A friend of our's does it reguarlly in his 1966 Humber Imperial with said number plate and has never (touch wood) been fined!

Don't know if the same works with the traffic safety cameras.....

I`ve got a map somewhere so will check on the perimeter of the charging area. Both bridges will certainly be outside so a quick whizz along the river from the city will be OK until 6.00pm
